Manufacturing in china

We have been working in the Chinese manufacturing scene for many years, in our blog we share some of the lessons we learned and some tips about manufacturing in China.

Talking about quality, the Chinese dilemma

Misconceptions

When thinking about “made in China” products, immediately comes to mind goods we normally see in the Chinese store around our neighborhood. Many people refer to Chinese products as something that will only last a very limited amount of time, will not work properly, or is lacking the sharp look of a neatly made good. Young startups are looking for quality, so most of the time they avoid the need to use Chinese manufacturers. Although it seems China’s dominance in manufacturing is still massive, and will not change soon, even with labor costs rising in the latest years. Most of our technological products are manufactured there and companies such as Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei, or DJI produce many of their components and final products in the country.

Quality control

It is true that China’s reputation has been affected by a few scandals regarding poor or even hazardous productions. However, depending on the amount of detail and control you put on your production the same will apply to your final product. One way to make sure you have some guarantee of a quality good, is to hire a third party QC (quality control) company. As you will be paying them separately, they will make sure you get what you expected. However, never assume they understood. Make sure you deliver them a QC list with all the items you would like to revise and check before mass production. Also, make sure you test your prototype before-hand and pay attention to details. Talk to the engineers. Even visit the assembly line if possible. The stronger the relationship you create with your suppliers, the easier it will be to correct any mistakes they make. (this will happen eventually)

Low-cost equals low quality

When trying to negotiate a deal with a supplier, take into consideration that they will probably never say no to your low-cost demands. However, you might be disappointed when your final product arrives. Explore your options and negotiate with respect, the businessman in China take their job very seriously, so do not underestimate them. Make sure you know the kind of component they will use and do not lower the prices to the extreme. Always remember, you get what you pay for. China is still a giant when it comes to technology manufacturers. If you know where to look, you will be able to find a supplier that is loyal and responds to your requests not just as a Chinese factory but as a business partner who can delivery you high quality goods.
